The outdoor activities brand has supported mountaineers on their alpine adventures since 1980. It all began in 1980, when founder Gerald Kampel developed the first dual-frequency device, "F2," for avalanche searches, thus laying the foundation for Ortovox.
The name comprises "Ortovox" and "Vox," the voice - which is perfectly reflected in the revolutionary Direct Voice avalanche transceiver, which uses voice navigation to give search commands.
Wool or what?
Not long after the company was founded, another USP of the gear specialist from Taufkirchen in south Bavaria crystallized: merino wool in technical mountain sports clothing. Ortovox has been forging ahead of the synthetic trend in the outdoor industry by making apparel made from and with wool since 1988. Wool from Tasmanian merino sheep forms the basis for the exceptionally high quality of the fine merino fibers. Since 2017, the brand has had its own wool standard, promising that no sheep are mulesed.
Together with the Swiss wool from local farmers in Switzerland, the fibers offer optimum comfort and excellent heat regulation in clothing and also at the skin contact points of some backpack series, such as the Alpine Peak Light series. In addition to the wool from Tasmania and Switzerland, almost 57% of the textile products are made from Europe.
The rest of the production facilities are mainly focused on Vietnam, as Asia, in particular, has a great deal of expertise in technical clothing. With its People Report, Ortovox emphasizes the relevance of fair working conditions and wants to promote these standards in its production facilities.
Who dares, will develop further
In addition to the Peak Light series for the glaciated mountain world, Ortovox has revolutionized the market with other signature collections: the clothing in the Western Alps series for the challenging 4000-metre peaks in Switzerland, the clean backpacks in the Traverse series for long-distance hiking and trekking and, of course, one of the latest benchmark products: the Litric avalanche backpacks with an electronic release unit. The neologism made from "Light" and "Electric" is part of the program and won the Ispo Award in 2022. Ortovox has thus taken safety on the mountain one step further.
With its avalanche safety equipment, technical mountain clothing, and mountain backpacks, the manufacturer has remained true to its line and optimizes its products a little further every year to meet the highest standards. To this day, innovative equipment and the extensive training programs of the Ortovox Safety Academy, with its practical courses and digital training tools on YouTube, continue to make outdoor activities a little safer for you every day.
Protecting what we love
However, the mountain sports outfitter not only focuses on the safety of mountain enthusiasts but also on protecting the mountain world itself. "Protect what we love" is the motto of the current protACT 2024 sustainability strategy. In addition to clearly defined goals such as climate neutrality by 2024, the brand is committed to social justice.
Ortovox has been awarded Leader Status by the Fair Wear Foundation for the fourth time in a row and appears in the MUT filter at Bergzeit. The issue of sustainability must be considered in many different ways, and the Bavarian manufacturer must be well aware of this. To ensure that the products can be used in the mountains for a long time, Ortovox pays particular attention to robust construction and repairability. After all, the durability and reliability of the parts play an essential role in sustainability and safety.
