Deuter is considered the pioneer and market leader in the backpacking sector in German-speaking countries. Deuter's roots go back a long way: Hans Deuter founded the company in Augsburg in 1898 as a mail bag and sack supplier for the postal service. Early on, Deuter focused on the production of backpacks.
In the meantime, Deuter has become an integral part of alpine history. Deuter backpacks have been exposed to the most extreme conditions on numerous expeditions and tested to the utmost - from the first ascent of the Eiger North Face by Anderl Heckmair in 1938 to the current expeditions of 8000m woman Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner. Intensive collaboration with extreme athletes and mountain professionals from the international mountain and ski guide associations forms the foundation for the innovations with which the Deuter product development team revolutionises the market repeatedly. After the first back-ventilated patented "Deuter Aircomfort" carrying system came onto the market in the mid-1980s, numerous other carrying systems followed.
Deuter was also the first brand to develop specifically designed cycling packs. Andi "Anderl" Heckmair, the originator of the eponymous MTB Transalp route from Oberstdorf to Lake Garda, created the "forefather" of all cycling backpacks, the Deuter Bike 1, in 1990. Before that, no packs were explicitly designed for cycling - it was diligently misappropriated. In addition to backpacks, Deuter has also been making comfortable sleeping bags for children and adults for 25 years now.
New CEO since July 2020
The signs at Deuter point to change. On 1 July 2020, Robert Schieferle, previously deputy managing director, took over the management of Deuter Sport GmbH. He thus replaced Martin Riebel, who had been managing the business in Gersthofen near Augsburg since 2012. Driven by the vision of inspiring mountain and outdoor fans worldwide, the sustainability strategy plays a significant role in the future of the new managing director, in addition to digital transformation.
Deuter’s eco-friendly and sustainable concept
A significant focus at Deuter is sustainable action from the beginning to the end of a product's life. Recycled and sustainable materials are used, and the company works with long-term production partners and offers a lifetime repair service. Deuter is a member of the Alliance for Sustainable Textiles. Since 2011 has been a member of the Fair Wear Foundation (FWF), which works within the textile and clothing industry to improve working conditions in local production countries. For the seventh time, Deuter was awarded Leader Status in December 2019.
When optimising manufacturing processes, Deuter relies on the bluesign system, the world's strictest protection for environmental protection, occupational safety and consumer protection. To meet strict animal welfare requirements, Deuter has only used down and feathers certified according to the Responsible Down Standard (RDS) for its sleeping bags since 2015. The RDS controls the entire production and supply chain from the chick to the finished sleeping bag.
2020 - entire PFC-free collection
Since only PFC-free products have been manufactured since 2020, Deuter is setting another example for sustainability and environmental protection. Thanks to an environmentally friendly DWR finish (Durable Water Repellency), the environmentally harmful per- and polyfluorinated chemicals (PFC) will be eliminated.
The new urban UP series from Deuter is not only PFC-free but the fabrics are also made from 100% recycled PET bottles. The sustainably made daypacks are certified according to the bluesign standard and the GRS (Global Recycled Standard) and are perfect companions for everyday life.
