The right length

Where do I find the sole length for my ski boots?

5 minutes read
The sole length is an important factor when it comes to ski boots and ski touring boots. We explain why the length is so important, where to find it and how to measure it.

Ski boots don’t just stop at foot length or size specification (mostly in EU, US sizes or Mondopoint). In some cases, for the purpose of mounting ski bindings, for example, the sole length is crucial.

What is the ski boot sole length?

  • The length of the sole is found on the outside of the ski boot.
  • The boot sole length is measured in millimetres and must ultimately fit into the ski binding.

The shoe size in Mondopoint, on the other hand, refers to the foot length in centimetres, which must match the respective internal dimensions of the shoe. Frequently, a shell (= sole length) covers two or more shoe sizes.

As is the case with dress sizes and shoe sizes, there is no standard size for the soles of ski boots, which can easily be converted. The sole length is neither directly linked to the shoe size, nor is it the same for all manufacturers. Even with a manufacturer, different ski boot models of the same size can have different soles! In particular, ski touring boots are often designed with a shorter sole length for ascent-oriented competition and alpine use, as this results in better walking comfort without skis and also saves weight.

Why do I need a sole length?

The sole length is necessary to mount and adjust the binding onto the ski.

  • On the one hand, the centre marking of the boot should match the mounting point on the ski so that the ski can be balanced.
  • On the other hand, bindings have only limited adjustment ranges. With some models, up to three shell sizes can be covered, in particular, very lightweight ski touring bindings have no adjustment range. For this reason, it makes sense to be able to mount a binding on the ski, if you have the boot. Otherwise, in the worst case, only re-drill.

How do I find or measure the length of the sole?

The sole length is normally indicated as a three-digit millimetre on the outside of the boot, usually in the heel area. This impression provides the most reliable information. Depending on the brand, the site may vary.

If the specification is not available or can not be seen, you have to measure the length yourself. For this purpose, the best method is to apply a meter and measure the sole from the heel to the heel.
